Forbes Says Angela Merkel Is Most Powerful Woman

Forbes says Angela Merkel is the most powerful woman in the world for the year 2007. She started out as a scientist like Margaret Thatcher. As Chancellor of Germany, Merkel has been mostly successful and currently enjoys a 75% approval rating. Forbes says...

[Merkel] recently urged China to respect the rules of international trade during a three-day trip to the country, a visit that sought to improve trade ties between the world's third and fourth largest economies. Merkel said she raised the issues of human rights, trade, environmental protection and China's rampant copyright piracy. During her second G-8 summit, Merkel got the disparate parties to stick to the agenda: combating climate change and poverty. As rotating head of the European Union, Merkel lead the way in forging a new European treaty to govern the often-unruly 27-member bloc. Domestically, despite raising taxes (at a time when countries increasingly enact pro-growth flat taxes).http://www.forbes.com/lists/2007/11/biz- 07women_Angela-Merkel_34AH.html

Currently Germany has achieved a five-year low in unemployment and annual GDP growth is robust. Merkel promoted protectionism by backing Germany's plans to block takeovers of German companies by foreign government investors. In 2007, Merkel was also President of the European Council. Explaining the reasons for her success Merkel said. "I tend not to jump to quick conclusions. I prefer to go over things carefully to see where the traps could be lurking."

I wonder where (none / 0)

HRC ranks now.  #25 last year, probably easily in the top ten, ahead of her good friend Nancy Pelosi who made the top five of "best looking people" on the Hill.

Definitely Hillary will rise on the list. if she gets the nomination and becomes president I assume she'll be the next #1. Oh happy day!

We need someone like Merkal here in the states (none / 0)

Smart, powerful, and actually has some common sense approaches to the economy.

Merkel kicks fanny (none / 0)

One of my best friends lives in Berlin - grew up under communist rule behind the wall.  He thinks she rocks and I completely agree.  She's turned Germany around from being too crazy-liberal to being pragmatically conservative.

We need to turn this country around from being too crazy-conservative to being pragmatically liberal.

They're just about the same goal.

Re: Forbes Says Angela Merkel Is Most Powerful Wom (none / 0)

Merkel is a fascinating figure.  Some mention should be made of the fact that she spent her entire young adult life living in the communist DDR and only entered politics after the Berlin wall fell (when she was 35).  She rose to to the top of a scandal-ridden CDU very quickly (and became the leader of that party in ten years).

One reason she almost certainly wants McCain to win, though, is European politics has this curious way of following changes in the American polity by approx. 5-10 years.  Merkel defeated the SDP's Gerhard Schroeder, whom, clearly, was a Clintonesque figure (who had himself come to power in 1998, ie. six year lag).  It's easy to forget that Tony Blair, another Clintonesque figure, only came to power in 1997.

If David Cameron becomes Britain's new MP next year (which seems likely), conservative parties will have taken power in the three most important countries in the EU, and if Obama wins this trend of Europe being out of sync will continue (but Merkel and Sarkozey aren't fools, they understand some up-and-coming opposition leader would then try to hitch his or her star to the Democratic resurgence in the United States).

Re: Forbes Says Angela Merkel Is (none / 0)

This is a fair judgment on Merkel. With a Democratic President next year, Nancy Pelosi could constitute a serious challenger.

Re: Forbes Says Angela Merkel Is (none / 0)

However, if the next president is Hillary Clinton I don't think Nancy Pelosi would be a challenger to Merkel on the list. Also, HRC as president would increase the power of the list because the U.S. presidency is very powerful and I think more powerful than any of the jobs the women currently hold on the list. It would be an enormous benefit to women if HRC is elected president and of course a benefit to our country because based on her skills, knowledge and experience HRC has what it takes to greatly strengthen our economy, national security and create positive changes to our health care educational and other systems.

Re: Forbes Says Angela Merkel Is (1.50 / 2)

Are you somehow stuck in a time warp?
It is as though you are writing and posting diaries from 3 months in the past.

Hillary Clinton will not be our President, at least not in 2008. The more you persist in writing comments such as the one above...the more unhinged you appear to be. Actually, unhinged, delusional, irrational and illogical barely scrape the surface.

And, no, that is not 'sexist'...I would say the same no matter your anatomical form. I would say the same if you were anticipating Edwards or Gravel being President in 2008. I would say the same if you were anxiously awaiting Colonel Sanders arriving to serve you breakfast in bed. I would say the same to anyone exhibiting thoughts and ideas not grounded in reality.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

I like it when people agree with me.

reality (none / 0)

I would say the same if you were anticipating Edwards or Gravel being President in 2008.

Those candidates got much less support than HRC. It is not realistic to refuse to admit that none of the Democratic candidates got enough pledged delegates to earn the nomination before the convention. There is no nominee.  That is a fact. Denying that fact is denying reality. And HRC won the secret ballot vote which is much better than caucuses at determining who the people really want to be president. And a few weeks ago Rasmussen found that HRC does better than Obama in a lineup with McCain. HRC got much more swing state support than Obama and the candidate with the most swing state support will win the general election. Clinton and Obama are both members of oppressed groups so either candidate would be historical. And HRC is a great leader and has more experience and accomplishments than Obama does.

If a superdelegates' prime criteria is electability they will choose HRC. It is harmful to the Democratic Party to choose the weaker general election candidate. More than 800 superdelegates will vote next month to determine who the Democratic nominee is. There is no nominee and that is a fact that you can check.

Also, I have troll rated you for making a personal attack against me.
